RuthPrawerJhabvalaandJamesIvory'sscreenplayusesRhys'snovelasafoundationfromwhichitconstructsaworldthatisbothtruetothenovelanddistinctiveinitsownright,paintingasocietythathaslostitsinhibitionsandinadvertentlylostitssoul.Wearetakentomirroredcafes,thenmovethroughthelookingglass:Marya,inonescene,isofferedajobasamodelandthenfindsherselfinasadomasochisticpornographer'sstudio.Thefilm,asphotographedbyPierreLhomme,createsthoroughlycinematicmomentsthatRhy'snovelcouldnothaveattempted:inoneoftheIvory'smostmemorablescenes,ablackAmericanchanteuse(extraordinarilyplayedbyArmeliaMcQueen)entertainsParisianpatronswithabigandbrassyjazzsong,neithersubtlenorelegant.Ivorykeepsthecameraonthesinger'sact:thereissomethinginherunguardedsmilethatmakesthedangerbeneathMontparnassemannersseemmoreacute.
